The Story Behind Halotherapy

Halotherapy was born from lived experience—both as a nurse and as a mother.

I’m Hayley, a Registered Nurse originally from a small town in New Zealand and now based on the Gold Coast. I’m also a mother of two. I completed my nursing degree while caring for a newborn, navigating early motherhood alongside the realities of clinical training and shift work.

Like many women, I experienced the “usual suspects” of the postpartum period—and then some. Recurrent blocked ducts, mastitis, tongue tie, poor latch, postnatal depression, and the added complexity of living with Hashimoto’s disease. I did everything I was told to do. I followed the guidelines. I sought support. Yet despite best efforts, relief was often temporary and symptom-focused.

It became clear that while Western medicine excels in acute care, it can fall short when it comes to addressing underlying causes and individual recovery—particularly in the postpartum period.

With my second child, everything changed.

During another episode of painful blocked ducts, I was introduced to Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT). I had never heard of it being used for breastfeeding-related inflammation—and neither had the lactation consultants, GPs, or midwives around me. Yet the results were undeniable. The relief was rapid, the tissue softened, and for the first time, my body responded in a way that made sense.

I was shocked that a therapy so widely researched and used internationally was virtually unknown in everyday healthcare settings here.

So I did what nurses do best—I started telling people. Anyone who would listen. I’m sure I was annoying.

But I soon realised that talking wasn’t enough.

Halotherapy was created to bridge that gap: to bring effective, evidence-based therapies into everyday care, delivered with clinical reasoning, safety, and compassion. The focus is not quick fixes or symptom masking, but supporting the body’s ability to heal—treating the cause, and the individual, not just the symptom.

Today, Halotherapy provides nurse-led Low Level Laser Therapy and Therapeutic Ultrasound to support breastfeeding challenges, post-operative recovery, pain, inflammation, and tissue healing. These therapies are well-established internationally. It’s time we caught up.

This is care informed by science, grounded in nursing, and shaped by lived experience.
